Donna Gillispie

Donna Gillispie

A native of the Ozarks, Donna Gillispie obtained a Fine Arts degree from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. She has studied with several nationally known artists and constantly learns through books, museums, exhibitions, demonstrations and studying the Old Masters.

While her paintings are mostly representational, she starts each one with an abstract design pattern. The compositions then evolve instinctively. They are basically arranged by putting shapes together that are related and connected to each other.

She feels painting can be a very powerful tool of communication. Sometimes it can be a plea to a viewer for them to care as deeply about a subject as the artist does. The plight of the area lakes have profoundly influenced her recent works. Although her paintings convey a message, they also celebrate the joy of painting color, form, and texture.

Her work often consists of marbleized paper, which is produced by floating colors on liquid, arranging them to form a design, and capturing the image by making a contact print. Her paintings also incorporate acrylic gels, molding pastes, metallic paints with real metal particles that create beautiful, authentic patinas over time.

Finally gilding is often applied after she is satisfied with the metallic paint application.
